She will discover the best of herself in the worst of times . . . Texas, 1934. Elsa Martinelli had finally found the life she'd yearned for. A family, a home and a livelihood on a farm on the Great Plains. But when drought threatens all she and her community hold dear, Elsa's world is shattered to the winds. Fearful of the future, when Elsa wakes to find her husband has fled, she is forced to make the most agonizing decision of her life. Fight for the land she loves or take her beloved children, Loreda and Ant, west to California in search of a better life. Will it be the land of milk and honey? Or will their experience challenge every ounce of strength they possess? From the overriding love of a mother for her child, the value of female friendship and the ability to love again - against all odds - Elsa's incredible journey is a story of survival, hope and what we do for the ones we love. The Four Winds is a deeply moving, powerful story about the strength and resilience of women and the bond between mother and daughter, by the multi-million-copy number one bestselling author of The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah.

A story of courage, sacrifice and grit

Aimee - Cromwell Paper Plus - June 2021

Four winds has the same sense of desperation and and triumph as one of my favourites books Where the Crawdads Sing. I spent the last half of the book cheering on the leading character, hoping that she would make it through... The story begins in Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up. It truely was one of the darkest periods of the Great Depression. In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is her story of courage, sacrifice and grit

Wonderfully Descriptive, beautifully written

Sue - Paper Plus Masterton - February 2021

Kristin Hannah has an eclectic backlist that has drawn a wide audience who have loved individual books she has written. In recent novels she has taken elements of nature in varied wilderness settings and explored survival themes and resilience of character. Four Winds holds to that template and is an ‘epic novel set in an epic time’. “1934, Texas…millions are out of work, they’re not just hungry, they’re desperate. A monster drought has broken the Great Plains and farmers are fighting to keep their land and livelihoods as crops fail, the waters dry up and dust threatens to bury them all. This is the Dust Bowl era and a dangerous time. Eliza Martinelli, like many others must make an agonising choice – fight for the land she loves or go west to California. This is a compelling, agonising story and a woman trying to choose the least-terrible of the options. It’s very much a portrait of America and and the American dream…wonderfully descriptive, strong characters, beautifully written.”
