Right from the get-go this story has rising momentum and drama.

John, Glenfield Paper Plus - January 2020

Right from the get-go this story has rising momentum and drama. It is desperately compelling as you follow the central character and the people that join her on their migrant journey to escape to safety to a country that is not necessarily welcoming. I also enjoyed the stories of the human kindness and the level of trust migrants have to place in other people who can control their fate.

A book you won’t want to put down from the action packed first page.

A book you won’t want to put down from the action packed first page. A captivating story about a wife, a mum who after a shootout which saw her family massacred in front of her, grabbed her son and traveled through Mexico to get to the border to escape the man and cartel who wanted them both dead as well. A thriller from start to finish with Lydia never losing the will and strength to save herself and son. A great read.

It’s a gut-wrenching ride, and a brilliant read, exciting and shocking in equal parts.

Fiona, Paper Plus - January 2020

This book by Jeanine Cummins grabs you by the throat from page one, and the pace doesn’t let up until the very last page. Based in Acapulco, the story follows Lydia, a bookstore owner, and her son Luca. One day a man enters her bookstore and chooses a couple of her favourite books – and Lydia is charmed by this man’s intelligence, charm and charisma. Unbeknownst to Lydia, Javier is the head of a powerful drug cartel, and is responsible for many horrific gang killings in Acapulco. When Lydia’s journalist husband publishes an expose of Javier, the gang lord’s response is both swift and brutal. This is a story of Lydia and Luca’s flight north to safety in the US, their courage, determination, self-belief, sacrifice and humanity. It’s a gut-wrenching ride, and a brilliant read, exciting and shocking in equal parts. Highly recommended.
