Edgar Elliston, a WW1 veteran, was born in 1888. This book is one man's memories of a town from before it became one, captured on tape for approximately three years of weekly interviews from 1973. He talks about his life growing up in Blacks Point and Reefton; memories of his schooling, the people, their entertainment, the layout of the town and its services, all in a world before sealed roads and vehicles. He also speaks of his extensive career in the gold mining industry. How he worked as a boy shovelling quartz, and progressed to senior managerial and specialist positions. At the time she was interviewing and recording Edgar, Moria Lockington was a busy wife and mother of four small children. In the last five years, she has returned to the notes and recordings, and begun transcribing, researching, and collecting photographs. In 2023, 50 years after she began, Moira honours her promise to Edgar Elliston, by turning his life experience into a book.
