Incredible and compelling

Palmerston North Paper Plus - November 2019

Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew is transported to Auschwitz Concentration Camp. He speaks several languages and when the Germans realise this, they make him the Tattooist, the one who tattoos the numbers on the prisoner's arms as he can converse with many people. His job is "privileged" and he risks his own life by trading jewellery and cash obtained from murdered prisoners to buy food for his fellow inmates to keep them alive. On one occasion he meets a woman called Gita who is terrified as she stands in line ready to be tattooed. Something exchanges between them and is gives Lale the will to survive this nightmare and one day marry Gita. This book is incredible: it is at times hard to read but you are compelled to continue because of the determination and the dreams of a future of a man who believes it will happen.
