For almost 100 years the Timaru to Christchurch professional cycle race dominated the major point to point long distance races throughout the Dominion. In the early years, thousands flocked to the Addington Showgrounds to cheer the arrival of their mud-caked and exhausted champions. Special trams were laid on from Cathedral Square in the city, and spectators thronged to cycle shops in Christchurch where telegrams showing progress of 'The Great Race' were posted in the windows.
Other historic and significant South Island events are covered - some 95 races in all, supported by an impressive range of images.
