From international phenomenon Angie Thomas comes a hard-hitting return to Garden Heights with the story of Maverick Carter, Starr's father, set seventeen years before the events of the award-winning The Hate U Give. With his King Lord dad in prison and his mom working two jobs, seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter helps the only way he knows how: slinging drugs. Life's not perfect, but he's got everything under control. Until he finds out he's a father... Suddenly it's not so easy to deal drugs and finish school with a baby dependent on him for everything. So when he's offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. But when King Lord blood runs through your veins, you don't get to just walk away. Praise for The Hate U Give: No. 1 New York Times Bestseller Winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Award Winner of Children's Book of the Year at The British Book Awards Winner of the Amnesty CILIP Honour for the Carnegie Medal A major motion picture from Fox starring Amandla Stenberg "The Hate U Give says more about the contemporary Black experience in America than any book I have read for years." Nikesh Shukla "Stunning, brilliant, gut-wrenching." John Green "Utterly compelling." Sunday Times

Sue - Paper Plus Masterton - March 2021

Set in 1998, seventeen years before the events in T.H.U.G, this is Maverick Carter’s story – Starr’s dad. In the ‘hood’ of King Lord and Garden Disciple territory, gang tensions overshadow the potential of families and businesses alike, yet in amongst this we are warmed by the family connectedness and camaraderie. We often make assumptions when a family member is in jail, a gang member or arrives at parenthood early but this tale brings the human face and context. Maverick is young, without a prison-bound father and thrust into the care of his newborn son. I warmed to his character and his naïve assumptions of life. The title references rapper Tupac’s song and related to Maverick finding his way through the ‘hard stuff in life’. “With his King Lord dad in prison and his mum working two jobs, seventeen year old Maverick helps the only way he knows how – slinging drugs. Life is not perfect but he has everything under control…until he finds out he is a father and suddenly it is not easy to deal drugs, finish school and give all to what a new baby needs. But when King Lord blood runs through your veins, you don’t get to just walk away.”
